Activities

Students learn about and discuss the past and the future of firefighting. Then, they work through a real-life case study using the Engineering Design Process (EDP). During the activity, code Hopper to deliver water to burning buildings after visiting a water source using their knowledge of geometry and trigonometry.

Learning Objectives

-Participate in a group discussion working through the Engineering Design Process to envision the possible future of firefighting.

-Use knowledge of right triangles to find the angles Hopper needs to rotate and the distances Hopper needs to fly.

-Accurately code Hopper to extinguish all burning buildings in a simulation.

-Use the Engineering Design Process and STEM practices to redesign Hopper’s code as needed.
