What Students Learn
Students define weather as it relates to aviation and develop the technical skills required to interpret standard aviation reports and forecasts. They learn to recognize hazardous weather conditions that present safety risks and require flight cancellations. Additionally, students master the specific visibility and cloud clearance requirements necessary for legal and safe operations across different types of airspace.
What Students Do
Students design and fly paper airplanes in various simulated wind conditions to collect data on stability and flight paths. They practice decoding complex METAR and TAF strings to extract critical details like wind speed, visibility, and cloud cover. To demonstrate their proficiency, students complete FAA-style practice questions and participate in a collaborative METAR Trivia game to reinforce their ability to analyze real-time weather data.
