Lesson 3

3D-Printer Drone

What Students Learn

Students learn how construction technology has changed over time and discuss how drones could shape the future of the industry. Through a case study, they examine how engineers use the Engineering Design Process to design new tools and systems, and they explore how coding concepts like loops support efficient automation in real‑world applications.

What Students Do

Students work in teams to code Hopper to 3D‑print a hollow rectangular prism with a 10' × 10' square base inside a taped floor grid. They calculate Hopper’s speed, plan the print path, and use loops to command Hopper through five layers of the structure. Using the Engineering Design Process, they test, refine, and redesign their code to improve accuracy and efficiency.
