Lesson 1
Rural Delivery
What Students Learn
Students learn how drones are used to deliver healthcare supplies to rural and hard‑to‑reach communities, where traditional transportation can be slow or unreliable. They examine how regular polygons and equal angles help determine flight paths, and they explore how variables in computer science allow a single code to adapt to different delivery locations. Through discussion and a real case study, they see how the Engineering Design Process supports safe and efficient medical delivery.
What Students Do
Students code Hopper to deliver time‑sensitive medication from a central island to any of eight surrounding islands arranged in a regular octagon. They calculate Hopper’s speed, determine rotation angles, and write one adaptable program using a variable to select the destination island. Working through the Engineering Design Process, they test, refine, and improve their code while keeping Hopper within the 20' × 20' fly zone.
